The First Nations artist is a tradition bearer, political spokesperson, contemporary commentator, and agent for change. Whether declaring native presence, documenting injustice, or struggling to reclaim near forgotten skills, each creates with an uncompromising responsibility to themselves, their communities, and those who came before.
SECTION II: A PLACE TO STAND
Many of these individuals shoulder multiple responsibilities. They work to ensure that endangered forms of cultural expression and knowledge continue to be maintained and strive to achieve recognition for their art beyond tribal boundaries. They celebrate and interpret the vital role of traditional practices in the unification and strengthening of their communities. Others, not limited to convention, gracefully tackle disturbing truths in American history and popular culture.
