Abraham Van Schaick

by

Abraham Van Schaick was born in July 1787. He was the last child born to the marriage of Albany mainstays Goose and Maria Ten Broeck Van Schaick. However, his life would soon change as his father was "in a declining state of health" when he made his will in November 1788. Goose Van Schaick was dead by July leaving widow Maria with six growing children who had been provided for from his substantial estate. Baby Abraham came under Maria's care with the instruction to "make him equal in inheritance" to his siblings as he would mature.

Son of a prominent early Albany family, this Abraham Van Schaick appears to left no mark on the community-based record and has not been encountered following our most recent sweep of Internet-based resources. Perhaps he lived under his mother who passed on in 1829.

Abraham Van Schaick died in August 1829 at the age of 40. His funeral proceeded from his mother's home at 251 North Market Street to the Dutch church burial grounds. His remains eventually found their way to Albany Rural Cemetery where they were interred in the lot of his brother Tobias.
