The Saratoga
by
Stefan Bielinski

The Saratoga is the name of a schooner built for and owned by Philip Schuyler of Albany and Old Saratoga. It is the subject of three paintings by historical artist Leonard F. Tantillo. At the same time, it represents the story of how products were transported and shipped in the Hudson Valley and beyond.

notes

Sources: Many references to the Saratoga appear in core collection the papers of Philip Schuyler at the New York Public Library under the heading of "papers regarding his schooner, Saratoga, 1763-1768," (Box 32).

Tantillo's first representation of The Saratoga came as a result of his project best known as the chronological (26 ship) poster entitled Vessels of the Upper Hudson River. Since then, he has created the two separate historical paintings shown here.
