Getting There

Bottom Decoration
It was easier to go elsewhere in the 19th century. The Catskills were easily reached via the Hudson River and Niagara Falls came with the Erie Canal and the railroad. Ironically, the challenge of getting to the Adirondacks proved to be among its greatest attractions. For the tourist, the journey became as important as the destination. Not surprisingly, many of Stoddard’s photographs showed how to accomplish this feat and the enjoyment of doing so.
