In the fall of 2001 State Museum personnel visited the World Trade Center Recovery operation at Fresh Kills inspecting and documenting rescue and response vehicles destroyed in the collapse of the World Trade Center. By December the FDNY Engine 6 pumper was identified for the collection of the Museum. FDNY Engine 6 Company was among the first responders to the call on 9/11 as the pumper was specially designed to pump water through the standpipe to fight fires in skyscrapers, particularly the World Trade Center.

The Fire Department of New York donated the Engine 6 Pumper to the State Museum in early 2002.
