A MOHAWK IROQUOIS VILLAGE

Iroquois Village This sketch of the Village Model Diorama shows important features of a village site:
  • A clearing in the forest for the village and the surrounding agricultural fields
  • A stream as a source of water
  • Location above a steep bank and a surrounding palisade for defense
  • Alignment of the longhouses with the contours of the hilltop

These pictures from the dioramas highlight important features of Iroquois village life as it was before European influences caused major changes in it. The accompanying text provides background information to put the pictures in context.
