U.S. armies ended the Southern rebellion in the spring of 1865—after four years of the most costly war Americans had ever endured. But the nation's rejoicing was soon tempered by the assassination of its greatest president. New Yorkers joined their fellow countrymen in mourning Abraham Lincoln and setting the nation on a new course.
