Printers, Publishers, and Bookbinders

This page will begin to provide access to those working in printing and publishing in early Albany.

The first recorded practicioners were the Robertson brothers Scottish émigres who came from New York City to start the Albany Gazette in 1771. That enterprise was short-lived but the printers managed to continue working as "job" printers in Albany until those loyalists were forced out to the safety of British-occupied New York in 1776. The Gazette resumed operations in 1784 under the editorship of the Webster brothers. Other newspapers followed.
