John Lansing Zabriskie

John Lansing Zabriskie was born in March 1779 and christened at the Albany Dutch church. He was the son of John Ja. and Lena Lansing Zabriskie. His New Jersey-born father died in 1782 and John L. spent the rest of his early childhood in the Albany home of his maternal grandfather. His circumstances were noted in the will filed by his Hackensack grandfather in March 1786. The following year, his Albany-born mother re-married and took her small family to live in the Schenectady home of her new husband.

In 1797, John Lansing Zabriskie was a member of the first graduating class of Union College.

He married Sarah Berrea. His son was born in 1805 and became a notable medical doctor. A second son was a prominent politician.

In 1801, he became the second pastor of the Reformed church in Greenbush, Rensselaer County. His first son was christened there in 1805.

In 1811, he re-located to Millstone, New Jersey.

The Rev. John Lansing Zabriskie died on August 15, 1850 and was buried in the Hillsborough Reformed cemetery in Hopewell, New Jersey. His epitaph described him:

Pure in life
sincere of purpose With zeal, perseverance and prudence
Devoted to the service of his master
Here amid the loved people of his charge
His earthly remains await
