Maria Wendell was born in February 1685. She was the third of the ten children born to Albany merchant Evert Wendell and his wife, Elizabeth Sanders Wendell.

Nineteen-year-old Maria married her cousin Albany merchant Barent Sanders at the house of Mayor Johannes Schuyler in 1704. The couple made their home on Pearl Street. Their three children, born between 1705 and 1714, were baptized in the Albany Dutch church where both parents were members and frequent baptism sponsors.

Although her family was much smaller than most, Maria's sons became leading citizens in Albany and Schenectady. However, she was not able to enjoy their success or her grandschildren as Maria Wendell Sanders died in June 1738. She was fifty-three years old.
