Catharina Van Wie Van Deusen

by

Catharina Van Wie also was known as "Lena." Family-based resources tell us that she was the daughter of Bethlehem residents Hendrick and Maria Loek/Luke Van Wie and that she was christened in Albany in March 1751. If so, she would have been the first of those parents' seven children and would have been married while still only eighteen years old. However, we still seek precise information on her origins.

In December 1769, she married the twenty-two-year-old Albany native Pieter Van Deusen at the Albany Dutch church. At that time, their marriage license identified both partners as young people of Albany County. But, in 1774, 1782 and 1783, only three children had been christened at the Albany church. Her young marriage age, small family, and the seemingly unconnected names of her children dictate caution in discerning her parentage.

Perhaps this family remained in Albany for many decades as ample material exists to document the life of "Peter Van Deusen" in Albany. However, a number of similarly named individuals inhabited the region throughout the eighteenth century.

Without specific subsequent references to this Catharina Van Wie Van Deusen we move on for now.
