Elizabeth Simpson Pepper

Elizabeth Simpson was the wife of Afro Albanian laborer William Pepper. She probably was born during the 1760s or 70s. We seek information on her origins and path to Albany.

Four of their children were christened at the Albany Dutch church between 1795 and 1801.

In 1790, she probably was the other "free person of color" accounted for within Pepper's Watervliet home. By 1800, the Pepper household was enumerated in Albany's second ward and housed four free people of color.

"Eliz. Simpson" was buried from the Dutch church in September 1802. She probably had not lived fifty-years. William Pepper survived until at least 1817.
