Maayke Hun Van Buren

by

Referenced variously, Maayke Hun probably was born during the late 1730s. She was the daughter of Harmen and Elsie Lansing Hun. Probably named for her grandmother, "Maiacke" grew up in the house of a Court Street leatherworker amid the residences of a number of extended kin.

In December 1758, she married Cornelis Van Buren (farmer of Albany County) at the Albany Dutch church. Their marriage bond filed a month earlier identified her as a single woman (and spinster) of the city of Albany. Almost a year later, their daughter Elsie was christened in Albany.

These Van Burens are said to have made their home in his native Kinderhook. However, the sole Cornelius Van Buren listed on the first Federal Census of 1790 was counted in the Montgomery County town of Caughnawaga.

In 1794, she was listed among the heirs in the will filed by her father.

According to family-based resources, Albany native Maayke Hun Van Buren died in March 1817 and was buried in the Van Rensselear cemetery in East Greenbush. Daughter Elsie had married Nicholas Van Rensselaer. Maaicke's husband may have lived until 1822.
