by Stefan Bielinski Cornelis W. Groesbeck was born in November 1777. He was the son of Willem and Catharina Van Deusen Groesbeck. He grew up in a leatherworker's home located along Foxes Creek. In 1802, his name appeared on an assessment roll as a resident of his father's second ward house. By 1809, he owned two stores and a lot on Market Street. For many years thereafter, the businesses of "C. W. Groesbeck" and associates were listed in the city directories at 319 North Market with his residence at 4 North Pearl Street. In 1815, he was an alderman in the third ward. He married Jane Pruyn in March 1806. Their children were baptized in Albany. She died in December 1830. Cornelis W.
