Margarita Wendell was born in January 1770. She was the daughter of Hendrick and Maria Lansing Wendell.

By 1789, she had married Matthew Trotter - a Revolutionary war veteran and prominent militia officer. By 1803, four of their children had been christened at the Albany Dutch church where Margarita was a member and pewholder.

These Trotters became prominent residents of Court Street. Matthew Trotter was a sometime mariner who was in business with his wife's family. Margarita joined her husband in real estate transactions and was named in the will of her father filed in 1786.

General Matthew Trotter died in 1830. Widow Margarita Wendell Trotter died in July 1849 at the age of eighty.
