Sharpby
The three Sharp family members whose households were listed on the first Federal Census for the city of Albany in 1790 have at least two distinctive historic origins. One line descended from the first Thomas Sharp - a seventeenth century soldier at the Albany fort. Perhaps the other branch began with one "Andries Hanse Scherp" who was living in New Netherland by 1660. Perhaps, Thomas's line included the barber Thomas Sharp who left his estate to four Albany-based children in 1771. In March 1779, three Sharp-named properties were identified on an assessment roll for the first ward of the city of Albany. In 1790, the households of Coenradt, Jacobus, and Peter Sharp were included on the census for the city of Albany. In 1813, four Sharp-named households were listed in the first Albany city directory. The possible connection of Albany resident Joseph Sharp (1749-1813) has not yet been determined. notes
