Eliza Province Dexter

by

Eliza or Elizabeth Province is said to have been born in Northampton, Massachusetts in July 1763. She probably was of Scottish ancestry.

In the Spring of 1790, she was a resident of Northhampton when she married Samuel Dexter. About that time, they relocated to Albany.

September 1791, both partners were confirmed in St. Peter's Episcopal Church. We are uncertain whether the marriage produced more than a duaghter.

Dexter was an apothecary who opened a drugstore in Albany in partnership with fellow newcomer Dr. Thaddeus Pomeroy.

These Dexters lived first near the waterfront and then permanently at 57 State Street.

Dexter died in August 1825. His will made her the sole heir and executor. After Dexter's death, she may have remained in Albany. Eliza Province, the widow of Samuel Dexter, died in October 1846. She had lived eighty-four years.
