Maria Brooks Van Zandt

by

Maria Brooks was born in February 1739. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Rebecca Tatten Brooks. She grew up with several siblings who became Albany residents in a modest home in the first ward.

In December 1758, she married her Southside neighbor, the somewhat older Jacobus (James) Van Zandt at the Dutch church in Albany. By 1767, two of her children had been christened there.

These Van Zandts also lived modestly in a house in the first ward. In 1790, their household included two children.

Jacobus Van Zandt died in November 1795. In 1800, Widow Mary was listed on the census as the head of her first ward household. In 1813, widow Mary Van Zandt was listed in the first city directory as head of the household at 10 Union Street.

Maria Brooks Van Zandt died in May 1814 and was buried from the Dutch church. She had lived seventy-five years. Her son was a prominent banker who lived in the Union Street home until his death in 1858.
