Debora Beekman Staats
by
Stefan Bielinski

Debora Beekman was born in October 1726. She was the daughter of Albany mainstays Jacob and Debora Hanson Beekman.

A few months shy of her twenty-first birthday, she married Gerrit Staats in June 1747. By 1764, their eight children were baptized in the Albany Dutch church where she was a pewholder. She was left a bequest in the will of her father who died in 1739.

For a short time, these Staatses lived in Albany's second ward where both partners had spent much of their earlier years. Gerrit Staats then relocated his family to his family's farm on Staats Island where they became prominent residents.

Debora Beekman Staats died in early August 1764 following the birth of her last child. Gerrit Staats died sometime afterwards!
