RETURNING HOME

As the Northern army disbanded, New York’s volunteer soldiers began returning home. For many, the war was initially an adventure. Illusions were shattered as the war dragged on, however, and soldiers faced unimaginable horrors. The experience left them forever changed. Thousands bore the scars of battle, while others carried wounds that left no marks. Under these circumstances, New York State was quick to recognize the need to care for its veterans.
