Will of Elbert Gerritse - 1747



In the name of God Amen

The first day of June Anna Domini one thousand seven hundred fourty and seven

I Elbert Gerritse of the City of Albany taylor Considering the frailty of my body the certainty of death and the uncertain time and mind thereof but being of sound memory and mind praised be Almighty God do make this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking and disanulling all former wills and testaments by me heretofore att any time made either in word or writing and declaring this only to be my last will and testament in manner following. First I bequeath my soul to God who give it me hoping for the pardon of all my sins past thro the manta and mediation of Jesus Christ my body to the Earth to lay decently intered att the discretion of my executors hereafter named thereto rest in hope of a glorious resurrection and my temporall estate in the manner following that is to say I will that all my just debts be pay’d out of my said estate.

I give and bequeath unto my only and beloved sonn Hendrick Gerritse my Great Dutch Byble in right of premegeniture.

I do give unto him my said sonn Hendrick Gerritse all my cloathing and apparel belonging to my body whatsoever and my fuzae sword and wanlike furnature.

I do give devise and bequeath unto my said sonn Hendrick Gerritse and to his heirs for ever my now dwelling house and lott of ground in the City of Albany bounded on the south by the street on the east by Adam Jact on the west by ground belonging to the heirs of Haspert Jacobse on the north by foxes hill together with a gangway of about five or six foot wide loading from the rear or back side of the said lott along the west side of the lott of Elbert Grovansaat northerly to the street of thirty foot wide.

I also give unto my said sonn Hendrick and his heirs one other lott of ground lying within the limits of the Citty of Albany by north of foxes hill by west of the stockade and the street there of three rodd wide being bounded on the east by the said street on the west by ground heretofore belonging to Arent De Noorman on the north by the lott of my daughter Annatie Gerritse on the south by the lott of my daughter Alida Greveraad it being the just half of all the ground between the lott of my daughter Annatie and the lott heretofore by me released unto Isaac Grevesatt provided always. and I will that my beloved daughter Annatie Gerritse remain in and hold possession of my now dwelling house & lott of ground thereto belonging in the City of Albany for and during the time and space of two years and six weeks next after my decease. I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Annatie Gerritse all and singular my personall estate whatsoever unto her, her heirs and assigns for ever only excepting what I have hereby given to my said sonn Hendrick.

I give devise & bequeath unto my said daughter Annatie Gerritse her heirs and assigns for ever all those four certain lotts of ground situate lying and being within the limits of the Citty of Albany that is to say one lott lying by south of foxes hill between the lott of the heirs of Bastian Visger and the lotts of her the said Annatie these unto bounded and on the south to the street on the north by foxes hill & another lott of her the said Annatie the second lott lying by north of foxes hill bounded on the west by ground of said Annatie on the east to a lott of my grand sonn gerrit Ryerse gerritse on the south by ground of the heirs of Haspert Jacobse and the heirs of Bastian Fisher and the lott of her the said Annatie on the north by a street of thirty foot wide containing about seventy foot east and west along the said street. the third lott lying by north of foxes hill bounded on the north to ground of Willholmer Van Denbergh on the east by a lott of my daughter Alida Greveraad on the south to the street of thirty foot wide on the west to the street of three rodd wide. The fourth lott lying by north of foxes hill by west of the Hock and of the street of three rodd bounded to the said street the south to the lott of my sonn Hendrick on the west to ground formly belonging to Arent the Norman containing in breath by the street thirty foot. To hold the before mentioned and described four lotts of ground unto my said daughter Annatie Gerritse her heirs and assigns for ever.

I do give devise and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Alida Greveraad two lotts of ground within the limits of the Citty of Albany by north of foxes hill one lott thereof is bounded on the north by ground of Willholmer Van Denbergh on the east to Isaac Greveraad on the south to the street of thirty foot on the west to the lott of Annatie Gerritse containing in breath thirty foot. The other lott is bounded on the north by the lott of my sonn hendrick on the east by the street of three rodd on the south to the ground of Isaac Greveraad on the west to ground formly belonging to Arent the Noorman being by west of the Citty Hockado [stockade?]. This lott is to contain the just half of all the ground between the lott of my daughter Annatie and the lott heretofore by to released unto Isaac Greveraad. To hold the said before mentioned and described two lotts of ground unto my said daughter Alida Greveraad her heirs and assigns for ever.

I give devise and bequeath unto my grand sonn Gerrite Ryerse Gerritse and to his heirs for ever all that certain lott of ground within the limits of the Citty of Albany bounded on the east by the lane or gangway of my son Hendrick on the west by a lott of my daughter Annatie on the south by ground belonging to the children heirs of harpert Jacobse on the north by a street of thirty foot wide containing about seventy foot east and west along said street. This lott is lying by north of foxes hill. I give and bequeath unto my grand sonn Elbert Greveraad and to his heirs for ever that certain lott of ground within the limits of the City of Albany bounded on the south by the lott where I now dwell on hereby devised to my sonn Hendrick on the west by a lane or gangway. Also devised to my sonn hendrick on the north by the before mentioned street of thirty foot wide containing this lott in breath thirty foot in length from the said street to the lott where I now dwell on. Devised to my sonn Hendrick it is to be understood that all the above mentioned foot masure is dule in wood masure.

I do nominate and apoint my loving sonn Hendrick Gerritse with my loving frinds Johannis Jacobse Lansing and Wassel Van __haich the sole executors of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have signed sealed published and declared this only to be my last will and testament in the presence of the witnesses subscribing hereunto in my presence.

Transformed by SB from an online resource with the citation "New York Wills & In[t]estate Records: Will of Elbert Gerritse of Albany, Albany County, Vol. 1A, p. 272." Not found in AW. Some spelling, punctuation, and paragraphing supplied.

"Arent the Noorman" probably referred to an ancestor of Fox Street mainstay Arent Bradt, who later owned property nearby.
