Anna Yates was born in 1749. She was a younger daughter in the large family of Albany blacksmith Johannes Yates and his wife and Rebecca Waldron Yates. She grew up near her father's first ward smithy and on their farm in Rensselaerswyck. Anna was the sister of prominent attorney Peter W. Yates. Like her three surviving sisters, in 1776 she inherited a share of her father's estate.
In 1771, she married thirty-five-year-old merchant/skipper William Staats. Over the next two decades, their nine children were baptized in the Albany Dutch church. These Staatses lived in a home adjoining the family complex anchored by the old Schuyler house.
In 1815, she became a member of the Second Dutch Reformed Church.
Anna Yates Staats lost her husband in 1825. She died in June 1829 five months beyond her seventy-ninth birthday.
