Maria Van Zandt Flensburgh

by

Maria Van Zandt was born in January 1698. She was the daughter in the large family of Albany residents of Joseph Janse and Zytie Marselis Van Zandt.

In February 1716, she married middling businessman Matthew Flensburgh at the Albany Dutch church. By 1737, ten children had been christened in Albany.

Their home was on a back street in Albany's first ward near where both partners grew up.

The marriage ended with Matthew Flensburgh's death in June 1739. Maria was forty-three when she took for her second husband widower James Elswood in March 1741. Her fate thereafter is still undetermined!
