Rebecca Totten Brooks

by

Spelled and referred to variously, Rebecca Totten appears to have been born in 1707. If so, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Rebecca Springsteen Totten of Fishkill, Dutchess County.

In April 1727, "Rebecka Tattein" married newcomer Jonathan Brooks at the Albany Dutch church. Two months later, their first child was christened at the Albany church. By 1749, at least three more children had been christened there.

Following her marriage, Rebecca's family made their home above what became Pearl Street on "Gallows Hill" and were first ward mainstays for several decades.

In January 1773, "Rebecca Brooks" (and then her children) was named among the heirs in the will filed by her brother, John Totten of Dutchess County. She appears to have died sometime after.

the people of colonial Albany Sources: The life of Rebecca Totten Brooks has no CAP biography number. This sketch is derived chiefly from family and community-based resources. Rebecca's father appears to have been a native of Long Island.
