Margarita Schuyler Oliver

by

Margarita Schuyler was christened at the Albany Dutch church in September 1685. She was the first of at least six children born to Arent Schuyler and his first wife Janneke Teller Schuyler. Earlier that year, her parents filed a joint will that anticipated her arrival without actually naming her. Arent moved his family to New York City during the 1690s where Margarita's mother died about 1700. Her father remarried

In In November 1704, a New York license cleared her to marry one Charles Oliver. The marriage ultimately produced four children at least one of whom was christened in Albany.

In May 1702, "Lieut." Charles Oliver was admitted as a freeman of New York City. This budding Oliver family does not appear to have resided in Albany. Charles was often referred to as "of New York." His will, probated in 1719, noted that he had been sick and left the entire estate to Margaret "during her widowhood" while naming their five living children.

"Widow" Margarita Schuyler Oliver was dead by April 1723. She had died intestate and letters of administration then were issued to her "principal creditor."

Albany native Margarita Schuyler appears to have married an English officer and raised their family in New York City. She inherited the Charles Oliver's estate in 1719. Margarita Schuyler had died in New York by April 1723. She had lived for less then forty years.

notes

the people of colonial Albany Sources: The life of Margarita Schuyler Oliver is CAP biography number 1487. This sketch is derived chiefly from family and community-based resources.

Perhaps this individual was the "Lieut" Charles Oliver commissioned as a replacement in August 1696 by Governor Benjamin Fletcher. At some point, we may discover a more solid Albany context for this individual and thus be able to justify more study about him.
