Cornelia Staats Bleecker

Cornelia Staats was born in March 1759. She was a younger child in the large family of East side residents Gerrit and Debora Beekman Staats. She grew up at the family farm on Staats Island.

After the war (about 1783), she married Albany native Nicholas Bleecker. By 1800, nine children had been christened at the Albany Dutch church where she was a member and pewholder.

These Bleeckers lived first in the second ward and then permanently on Market Street where Nicholas was a prominent merchant and city official. Her younger brother also became a Market Street fixture.

After a marriage of almost fifty years, Cornelia Staats Bleecker died in December 1831. She was buried from her residence at 266 North Market Street. Her husband survived until 1844.
