Maria Pruyn Gerritse

by

According to traditional sources, Maria Pruyn was born in April 1672. She was the daughter of Frans Janse and Alida Pruyn. She grew up a part of a large family a tailor's home in the second ward.

In July 1693, she married Elbert Gerritse at the Albany Dutch church. By 1709, the marriage had produced five children who were christened in her church where she was an occasional baptism sponsor.

A silver bowl made by a transplanted Manhattan silversmith for Maria during the early eighteenth century has survived.

These Gerritses lived in the second and then third ward as Elbert followed Maria's father in the tailor's trade.

Maria Pruyn Gerritse died in August 1731 and was buried from the church. Her husband survived until 1750.
