Brechie Pels Goelet Schuyler

by

Family-based resources tell us that Brechie Pels was born in February 1700 and christened at the Dutch church on Manhattan. Thus, she was the daughter of Evert and Grietje Van Deusen Pels of New York City. Two older, same-named sisters had died previously or young as did most of the twelve children born to their Van Deusen mother

In April 1720, Brechie married Raphael Goelet at the Dutch church in New York City. That marriage produced a number of children but no surviving sons.

"Being very sick," New York painter and glazier Raphael Goelet filed a will in December 1747. It provided for their children and then left a third of his remaining estate to my wife Breeckie". The will passed probate a month later.

June 1749, this "Breghie Pels Goelet" was forty-nine when she married widower Pieter Schuyler. At this point, we have not been able to explicate the ensuing years of their marriage. They probably did not live in Albany city but in the surrounding hinterland of Albany County where both their families supported numerous (and often affluent) households.

In September 1769, "Bregje Pels Goelet Schuyler" filed a will in Albany. It named no husband or children but only other kin. She was dead by July 1789 when the will was probated (with two Albany mainliners as executors) in Albany.
