Gerrit Marselis

by

Gerrit Marselis was born in February 1698. He was a younger son of Gysbert and Barbara Groesbeck Marselis. He grew up in his father's house in the second ward.

In December 1730, he married Margarita Bleecker at the Albany Dutch church. By 1750, eight children had been christened in the church.

This Marselis family also made its home in the second ward where Gerrit was a "schipper" and city officer. He served as firemaster in 1732 and was elected alderman in 1754 and 1755. In 1742 and 1763, his name was found on Albany freeholders' lists.

Gerrit Marselis was dead by 1779 when his widow was the owner of record on a city assessment roll. She survived until 1800.
