James Hooghkerk

James Hooghkerk (sometimes Jacobus and/or Hoogkirk) was born in October 1770. He was the son of Abraham and Anna Hilton Hooghkerk. He grew up in a well-established Southside family where his father operated a brickyard.

In July 1792, Jacobus married young Alida Van Zandt at the Albany Dutch church. By 1810, nine children had been christened at their Albany church.

These Hooghkirks raised their family in a modest first ward home. In 1800, their budding household included five family members. A decade later, the census configured his household with five boys, three young girls and the parents who, by that time, were approaching their forties.

However, James Hooghkerk was gone by 1813 when the widow "Ann Hooghkirk" (his mother) was one of five family households listed in the city directory as the principal at 38 Beaver Street.
