Maria Douw Gansevoort

by

Maria Douw was born in November 1725. She was the daughter of Albany mainstays Petrus and Anna Van Rensselaer Douw. She grew up in a large and prominent family - enjoying the comforts of upper class homes in Albany and across the Hudson.

In December 1750, she married brewer - businessman's son Johannes Gansevoort at the Albany Dutch church. Within a few years, the marriage had produced four children.

This Gansevoort family settled down in the third ward where Johannes took over his father's brewery.

Maria Douw Gansevoort died in August 1759. She had lived only thirty-three years. Her husband re-married, fathered more children, and survived until 1781.
