Shibboleth Bogardus

by

Shibboleth Bogardus was born about 1677. He was the son of Albany residents Pieter and Wyntie Bosch Bogardus.

During the early 1700s, he married woodsman's daughter Ann De Garmo. By 1726, the marriage had produced nine children who were christened in the Dutch churches in Albany and New York City.

He set up his home in a prominent location on one of Albany's back streets (Middle alley near the north wall). In 1699, he signed a community-based oath swearing allegiance to the king of England. In 1720 and 1742, he was counted among Albany's freeholders living in the second ward. He was paid by Albany for work but held no municipal offices or positions.

Shibboleth Bogardus died in September 1747 and was buried from the Albany church.
