Mary Brooks Matthews

A woman named Mary Brooks married army officer and later Albany resident Edmund Matthews in 1760. At that time, she was identified as a spinster. We have not yet connected her to the Brooks family of early Albany. She probably was not the daughter "Maria" christened in Albany on February 4, 1739.

During the 1760s, Matthews was an Albany merchant and first ward property owner. In July 1766, he posted a notice in a New York City newspaper that he would no longer be responsible for debts incurred by his wife Mary. He died intestate in 1771.

We seek more definitive information on the background and later life of Mary Brooks Matthews.
