Janet Barker Barkley

Janet Barker probably was born in Scotland about 1757.

At some point, she relocated to North America.

In November 1788, she married fellow émigré James Barkley at St. Peter's Episcopal church. Beginning a few months after the wedding, their children were christened at the Albany Presbyterian church. A likeness of a piece of "mourning art" commemorating the passing of some of their small children during the 1790s is temporarily un-locatable!

These Barkleys raised their family in a middling house on the hill above Pearl Street where James supported them as a carpenter and city place-holder.

Janet lost her husband in May 1814. Subsequent city directories identified her as the "Widow of James Barkley" at 59 Chapel Street. Janet Barker Barkley died in May 1818 and was buried in the Presbyterian burial plot. She had lived sixty-one years.
