Douwe Bogert

by

Douwe Bogert was born about 1714. He was the son of Peter and Rebecca Fonda Bogert. He grew up with brothers and sisters in a shoemaker's home in Albany's third ward.

In December 1739, he married Albany native Willempie Bradt at the Albany Dutch church. By 1757, six children had been christened in Albany.

Like his ffather, Douwe Bogert was a shoemaker who lived in the second ward. He was an Albany mainstay during the 1760s but absent from Albany rolls after that. In 1767, he was listed on the roster of an Albany militia company.

Douwe Bogert last witnessed a baptism in 1771. He probably died during the 1770s. His widow was named as the owner of his property on assessment rolls in 1779 and in 1788. Also that year, his name remained on some Albany account books.

His son, Barent Bogert, followed Douwe in the leather trade and later was Sexton of the Dutch church.
