Catalina Abeel Matthews

by

Catalina Abeel was born in October 1698 and christened in New York City. She was the daughter of Albany and New York merchant Johannes Abeel and his wife, Catharina Schuyler Abeel. Her father served two terms as mayor of Albany in 1694 and again in 1709. Johannes Abeel died in 1711. Within a few years, her mother re-married and gave birth to four more children.

By 1723, Catharina had married Vincent Matthews, son of an officer in the English garrison serving in Albany County. They had seven children - only the first one christened in Albany.

This Matthews family lived in the mid-Hudson Valley - in Ulster and Orange counties on land derived from grants to both their families. Her husband became a prominent regional officeholder.

Catalina Abeel Matthews was dead by 1754 when Vincent Mathews re-married.
