COLONEL JOHN WOOL

John Wool was native of Newburgh, New York.  Wounded in his first battle at Queenston, Canada, in 1812, he nonetheless attacked the guns on the heights and took them before being captured.  Two years later at Plattsburgh he lead 200 regulars to blunt the invasion column of invading British army and fought for six days in close quarters before the enemy retreated.  Later Colonel Wool was appointed Inspector General of the Army.
