Lieutenant Colonel "Red George" Macdonnell commanded troops stationed at Fort Wellington in Prescott on the Canadian side of the St. Lawrence River. His two-pronged surprise assault on Ogdensburg routed about 500 American troops. With control of the town, Crown Forces burned the barracks and schooners frozen in the harbor. Military supplies that could not be taken back to Canada were also burned. American losses were 20 men killed and 70 made prisoner.
