Geertruy Schuyler Brinkerhoff

by

Geertruy Schuyler was born in July 1773. She was a younger daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Beekman Schuyler. Geertruy grew up in the riverside home of a prominent skipper and businessman in a landmark house on Market Street and at other Albany locations that were served by as many as nine slaves.

In September 1796, this Geertruy married John Brinkerhoff at the Albany Dutch church. By 1811, seven children had been christened in Albany.

These Brinkerhoffs would make their home along the Albany waterfront - probably first in the house of Abraham Schuyler and then in a riverside location listed in the city directories as 3 Dock Street. At the same time, his various stores were located at a number of addressses along North Market Street.

Secure in their Dock Street home, Geertruy Schuyler Brinkerhoff died in February 1826 and was buried from her church. She had lived only fifty-three years. Her husband survived until 1835.
