Andries Marselis

Andries Marselis (or Andrew) was born in May 1756. He probably was the first son born to the marriage of Johannes M. and his first wife, Cornelia Gardinier Marselis. He grew up in a small family in the home of a long-lived Pearl Street businessman. We have not found other age-appropriate, same-named contemporaries in the upriver region.

We believe that he was married and had a family but have uncovered scant references to that family in the records of early Albany churches.

Afterwards, his name (Andrew) was included on a list of those qualified to receive a land bounty right in conjunction with the Albany militia regiment.

In 1790, perhaps he was the "Andrew Merseilus" whose configured on the census of householders in Watervliet.

In June 1802, Albany Dutch church accounts showed a charge of 11 shillings for "Andries Marsellus son."

The will of "Andrew Marcelus" passed probate in Albany County in December 1814.

This individual seems to have made a slight impression on the community landscape. In short, we have not yet figured him out. Needing more information, we move on for now.
