Sara Hilton was born in 1747. She was the daughter of Albany resident Jacobus Hilton and his wife, Judike Martin Hilton. She grew up on Albany's south side surrounded by family members and other production class families as well.
Almost eighteen-years-old when she married Albany tradesman Ryckert Van Zandt in January 1765, her first child was born a few months later. By 1790, seven more of their children were baptized in the Albany Dutch church.
These Van Zandts also lived in Albany's first ward where Rykert practiced his trade and provided contract services for the city government until his death in 1814.
Widow Sara Van Zandt resided in their Green Street home until her death in December 1830 - shy of her eighty-fourth birthday.
