Sara Hilton Van Zandt
by
Stefan Bielinski

Sara Hilton was born in April 1693. She was the daughter of former garrison soldier William Hilton and his second wife, Anna Van Berkhoven Hilton. They raised a large family in a neighborhood on Albany's Southside.

In May 1718, she married Albany weaver Johannes Van Zandt. By 1738, eleven children had been christened at the Albany Dutch church where she was an occasional baptism sponsor.

Like both sets of their parents, these Van Zandts were first ward mainstays. However, their marriage lasted only twenty five years.

Sara Hilton Van Zandt died at age fifty in the Fall of 1743. She was buried from her church on October 1. Her husband survived for another two decades.
