Sara Gansevoort Ten Broeck

by

Sara Gansevoort was born in June 1741. She was the daughter of Albany natives Harmen and Magdalena Douw Gansevoort. She grew up in a landmark businessman's home on Market Street.

In June 1762, she married John C. Ten Broeck at the Albany Dutch church. By 1783, eleven children had been christened at the Albany church where she was a member and baptism sponsor. However, eight of her children died unmarried.

This Ten Broeck family lived in the third ward where John was a successful merchant and community leader. Throughout their long marriage, their house, next to that of her brother on Market Street, was an Albany landmark.
