John C. Cuyler

John C. Cuyler was born in December 1766. He was the son of Schenectady residents Cornelis and Anna Wendell Cuyler.

During the 1780s, he married Hannah Maley - daughter of his business partner. By 1810, their marriage had produced at least eight children - most of whom were baptized at the Albany Dutch church where he was a pewholder.

These Cuylers first lived with Hannah's parents but soon relocated to a house on Market Street where they were Albany mainstays for several decades. John Cuyler was a merchant in association with John Maley and later the co-executor of Maley's estate.

In 1800, he was named as one of the commissioners of the ill-fated Mohawk and Bridge Company. He was a supporter and director of a number of Albany-based business ventures as well. In 1814, he was identified as an alderman in the third ward.

John C. Cuyler appears to have left Albany after 1816. Perhaps he returned to Schenectady where he died in October of 1828.
