Elizabeth Cuyler Glen

by

Elizabeth Cuyler was born in May 1705. She was a daughter in the large family of Albany newcomer Johannes C. and Elsie Ten Broeck Cuyler. She grew up in the second ward home of a trader who held virtually every local office.

In December 1732, she married Schenectady native Jacob Glen at the Albany Dutch church. By 1743, her six children were christened at the Albany church where she was member, pewholder, and regular baptism sponsor.

This Glen family made its home in Albany's second ward from where Jacob paticipated in the Indian trade, served on the city council, and also as a frontier diplomat.

However, Jacob Glen died in April 1746 leaving a widow with several small children. Alone at forty-one, Elizabeth raised those babies to become important residents of Albany and its hinterland. Her house on Steuben and Chapel was an Albany landmark that was connected to both the Cuylers and the Glens.

Elizabeth Cuyler Glen lived there for more than forty years and died after 1785. Her daughter married the last mayor of colonial Albany.
