Leonard Cortney

by

Spelled and otherwise referenced variously, Leonard Cortney was appointed constable for the first ward in September 1766. Two weeks later, he was sworn in. Under a number of names, this person (although identified as Van Olinda Cortney and Linda Cortney was appointed again in 1767 and 1768. In 1767, he also was named high constable. Otherwise, his name seems to be absent from the community record thus far examined.

Was he the "Tom Corte" "the neger" whose property was valued on city assessment rolls in 1766? Was he the "John Courtney" who was listed as an enlisted man on an Albany militia company in 1767. What is the significance of the "Van Olinda" name reference?

A preliminary search of available Albany church records from the 1760s has not yielded useful material.

Where did he come from? Where did he go? At this point, only questions attach to this indivdual's profile.

This material is offered here in hopes of further characterizing this individual.
