John H. Beekman

by

The name of John H. Beekman was listed among the executors of the will filed by Albany mainstay John M. Beekman in 1788. At this point, no information on John H. Beekman has been encountered during our sweeps of the community-based record. Several similarly named contemporaries are at-risk in the region - including at least two individuals called "John H. Beekman." Cautious, we seek defining information on his origins and on his life.

Perhaps he was the son of Hendrick and Anna Switts Beekman who christened a "Johannes" at the Albany Dutch church in November 1738. If so, he may have married one Hendrickie Van Buren about 1761. Over the next two decades, at least three children were christened by them in Albany. In March 1795, that Hendrickie Van Buren was identified as the widow of "John H Beekman deceased" in the will filed by her father, a Greenbush farmer.

After that, many references to variants of "Johannes Beekman" appear in the community-based record. At this point, we are avoiding further speculation and including only references to John H. unless we are certain that they relate to this subject.

With many vital questions still unanswered, we move on for now from the life of the mid-eightenth century John H. Beekman
